Getting started

I don't feel any vibration.

The first 45 seconds are silent on purpose: BeatSleep is measuring your resting rate before it leads. If nothing happens after that, try Firm rather than Gentle under The vibration, and check that your band is snug: a loose band both dulls the vibration and stops the heart-rate sensor reading.

It says it can't read my heart rate.

BeatSleep needs the Health permission for heart rate. Grant it in Settings › Privacy & Security › Health › BeatSleep on your iPhone, or in the Watch app. Without it a session cannot start: the whole app is built on your live pulse.

The Sleep tab is empty.

That tab is read from Apple Health on the iPhone, so it needs the sleep permissions as well as heart rate: Settings › Privacy & Security › Health › BeatSleep, and turn everything on. If Health itself has no nights in it, because sleep tracking on the watch has never been switched on, there is nothing for BeatSleep to read yet.

Do I need to keep the app open?

No. Begin the night on the watch and put your wrist down. The screen fades on its own, and the session goes on leading with the screen dark.

The night itself

Does it make a sound?

A night, never. Not to start, not to lead, not to wake you. Apple Watch gives an app no volume for vibration, only a handful of patterns, and most of them carry a tone through the speaker, and BeatSleep uses the one that does not. It does not wake you at all: a night ends at the hour you set, in silence.

The one thing that can be heard is a breathing exercise. It is led by vibration by default, and you can ask for a soft tone instead, or for both, on the phone and on the watch. It is taken awake, so a sound is allowed there in a way it never is during a night.

The session ended before morning.

That is the failsafe, and it is on by default: five minutes after your pulse has settled at the target, the night closes itself, because by then the vibration has nothing left to do. If you want it to run longer, Protocol › How the night ends offers a hard ceiling of your choosing, or the whole night, which still stops at the hour you get up.

It keeps re-anchoring and the cadence goes back up.

That is it following you. If your pulse climbs, because you turned over or something woke you, BeatSleep stops pulling and re-anchors to your real heartbeat within a minute, rather than leading at a rate you are no longer near. Restlessness is followed, not fought.

How much battery does a night cost?

A session that closes itself is usually a quarter of an hour of watch time, which is very little. The whole-night mode keeps a workout session open until morning, and costs what any all-night tracking costs, so expect to charge in the morning if you use it.

Your data

How do I get my data out?

Protocol › Export my nights writes everything BeatSleep holds to a JSON file you can keep or inspect. Protocol › Erase everything deletes it permanently, on the device and in iCloud. Deleting the app also deletes everything it stored.

Where do my nights go?

Nowhere. There is no account and no server. They stay on your devices, and move between your watch and your phone over Apple's encrypted device link. If you turn on iCloud sync they also go to your own private iCloud database, in encrypted fields; turning it off deletes them from there again. The privacy policy has the whole of it.

BeatSleep Pro

How many nights do I get without paying?

Three whole nights in any rolling seven days. A night is counted when a descent actually begins, never for a breathing exercise, and nothing is held back inside one of them: the same descent, the same failsafe, the same adaptive floor, the same morning. The watch says how many you have left before you start one, and when they run out it gives you the date the next one arrives rather than a refusal.

The count is kept in your own iCloud key-value store, so the phone and the watch share one limit rather than each keeping their own.

Managing your subscription

BeatSleep Pro is billed through your Apple Account. To view, change or cancel it, open Settings on your iPhone, tap your name, then Subscriptions. Cancelling there stops the renewal; Pro stays active until the end of the period you already paid for. Refunds are handled by Apple, at reportaproblem.apple.com, not by us, because we never take the payment.

I paid, and Pro is not on.

Protocol › Restore purchases asks StoreKit again. Make sure the iPhone is signed in to the same Apple Account that bought it: a subscription belongs to an Apple Account, not to a device.

I have a promotional code.

Protocol › Redeem a code. A code granting Pro is a gift rather than a purchase: it carries no cash value and does not renew.

Something is wrong, or something is missing

Email the address above. Tell me what watch and what iOS version you are on, and what you expected to happen. You can also propose an improvement from inside the app, under Protocol: it opens a message with nothing filled in but the version number.
